FAQ's - Frequently Asked Questions

A Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number (TAN) is a ten-digit alphanumeric number provided in India to individuals who are required to deduct or collect tax on payments made on their behalf under the Indian Income Tax Act, 1961. All TDS/TCS returns, TDS/TCS payment challans, and TDS/TCS Certificates use this number.

TAN cards are normally supplied within 7 to 15 business days. However, the decision is made completely by the Government of India’s Issuing Authority. Once your application is submitted, Letz Manage will send you the tracking information.

All assessees who are required to deduct TDS on payments paid must quote their TAN. The TAN number must be stated in all communications with the tax department, or a penalty of Rs. 10,000/- will be imposed. TDS payments and TDS returns are also rejected if the TAN number is not provided.

The TAN number assigned for Tax Deduction at Source (TDS) can also be utilised for TCS. However, if no TAN has been assigned, you must apply for one.

A TAN is valid for the rest of one’s life and does not need to be renewed. If there are any changes to the information provided during the application for TAN registration, the Tax Department must be notified.
